Master Spotlight

Master 4-H Club member, Mrs. Yvonne Childs, was recently recognized as the Grady County Woman of the Year by the Grady County Chamber of Commerce. The following information was taken from comments made at the Chamber’s annual banquet when the award was presented.

The Grady County Women of the Year seems to never run out of energy, especially in her efforts to help the youth of this county in the 4-H organization. She strives to help them develop important leadership skills, is active in preserving and promoting the history of Grady County and was very busy during the Centennial celebrations. Her family and church are also the lucky recipients of her steadfast devotion.

Not only is this lady a Master 4-H’er, but her husband Elywn and three of her children, Vicki, Russell, and Steven, are also Masters, along with her oldest grandson, A. J. Childs. She served many years in various positions on the Georgia Master 4-H Board, as well as the State Volunteer Leader Board. Her efforts in these positions earned her the “Master of the Year Award” and the “Volunteer of the Year Award” in years past.

She lends her help to local 4-H’ers year round. When they are preparing for District Project Achievement competition, Yvonne hosts “spend the night” weekends in her home where youth must arrive with their demonstrations already memorized. Her ability to coach them in their delivery and presentations is unmatched. Even though they may not always win first place overall, their demonstrations are always first in their respective projects. Later at DPA, she’s always there supporting them whether they win or lose. She can be seen sharing tears of disappointment or joy with her 4-H’ers.

This year she organized a Community 4-H Club, The Triple G Club (Grady Go-Getters). They meet monthly in her home where she provides the leadership needed to acquire the material necessary to build strong portfolios. Many leadership and citizenship activities are practiced each month.

In addition to her work with individuals, Yvonne also does much to help her community. She served on the committee to raise money for the bell tower to display Grady County’s original, now restored, courthouse bell.

Other ventures for the Childs’ family include hosting Labo students from Japan and Costa Rica. In fact, they adopted their 4th child, Carmen, from Costa Rica nineteen years ago. Carmen lived with them through the 4-H Exchange Program for six months in 1987. At eighteen years of age, she came back to the United States to this family, and within a month they had adopted her.

Yvonne retired from the Grady County Health Department after 30 years of service as Administrative Operations Manager and Registrar of Vital Records. She serves on the Board of Magnolia Place Assisted Living Home in Cairo. Active in her church, she helps with many activities including mowing the grass regularly and helping keep the grounds. In the midst of it all, Yvonne and her husband, Ewlyn still find time to travel. They have traveled throughout Europe as well as the United States.
